On April 6th, at the Centrale Preneste, a show is staged that – I promise – will leave you speechless. It’s called Kick-off, and it’s the latest work by Teatro Buffo, the integrated theater-dance company that unites actors and dancers with and without disabilities, led by the Anticorpi cultural association, which has been working steadily in Rome since 2007.
The theme, once again, is sexuality: “The show is born from the project Eat with your hands – notes on sexuality, for which we have created a fundraising campaign”, explains Suzana Zlatkovic, president of the Anticorpi Association that manages the Teatro Buffo as a response to the needs of integration, socialization and entertainment outside the domestic space of the two Hospices where the disabled actors live.
“The show arrives after months of intense work on a delicate and strong theme like that of sexuality, which inevitably in an integrated theater-dance company is linked to that of disability: a natural sexuality, pleasant, free and at the same time denied, distorted and obscene. The project stems from the desire to tell of a sexuality that is not limited to a simple sexual act, but that is accompanied by the theme of the relationship with the Other and even before with oneself: investigating the desire, the drive, the pleasure, the suffering, the denial and intimacy generated by the encounter and discovery of one’s own body and that of others,” continues Zlatkovic.
“The choice we make – explains the director and choreographer Teresa Farella – is to show bodies and encounters, removed from the habits of everyday life. We like to introduce ourselves in this way, with the natural obscenity and sensual irreverence of the bodies that belong to us and that we move at dance pace”. A lyrical and intense show, almost entirely without lines, where the looks, the bodies, the unconventional movements, the music, the gestures, the scenography all contribute to a very suggestive atmosphere, able to reveal hidden parts of the onlooker.
Kick-off sounds urgent, and reminds the world not to close and hide souls and bodies in safe and protected places but to show and search for what is poetic and universal inside the folds and imperfections of ourselves. Only in this way can we be able to give meaning and understanding to sexuality and to existence itself. So get ready: the match begins!
